I LOVED this book. Absolutely fascinating look at how recent (last 20 years) archeological/anthropological research (and epidemiological/linguistic/geological/forensic, etc.) has turned our "knowledge" of how the New World was prior to Columbus ON ITS EAR. Basically everything you were ever taught was completely off-base. For example, new research indicates: human settlement/occupancy in the Americas vastly pre-dates previous assumptions; huge populations of indigenous peoples lived in North, Central and South America; vast,complex and organized cultures have been discovered of which we had little or no prior knowledge; effective and ecologically-viable agriculture/land/forestry/resource management and animal husbandry were practiced, using methods we have yet to understand and which may have profound implications on global issues of today; and much, much more... Mann writes in an accessible and often humorous style. He presents the material clearly and isn't afraid include conflicting evidence and state when "the jury's still out." More than simply a straightening of the record, this book clearly indicates a complex, sophisticated, vibrant, past beyond our awareness or comprehension. Good but not great. I'm going through a mystery phase and looking for good series to sink my teeth into -- I may or may not go one with this one. Interesting setting and plot, but I had a hard time with some of the characters -- particularly the relationship between Joe and Nancy, which just didn't make sense. Other characters seemed one-dimensional. A potboiler -- quick and easy beach read. Tries way too hard on the lingo. I was hoping it would be somewhat like Maisie Dobbs, which is set in the same era, but alas! NO comparison.
