It is a story about life and how it can be affected by traumatic events. It goes through the Columbine shootings and Katrina. Overall, it is a quite sad story.
On the bright side, this book was exciting for me in the sense that I went to UConn for Grad School, so I am pretty familiar with the places described. Nevertheless, there are some geographical discrepancies, such as the place where Morgan Seaberry was ran over: I am quite familiar with the hotel in front of McDonald's next door to East Brook mall; this is located in Route 195, the main road that goes through the UConn campus; in the book, it is described as Route 32, which is ways away, past Willimantic. I know this is a minute detail that doesn't affect the quality of the book, but I couldn't help to notice it.
Overall, it is a good book, a little too long. Levitt
I strongly agree with Jim about the superficiality of the book and that a good part of it is spent praising Levitt. I actually find quite distasteful to have an author (Levitt) presenting his own CV in such a colorful way. He already sold the book, so the further advertisement is not necessary.
As a scientist, it is quite obvious to me that looking at the numbers and applying an statistical analysis, you can get to conclusions. The novelty of this book rests in the fact that, once you use the data to analyze everyday facts, you can get surprised with the results. I think that the authors did an excellent job presenting Levitt's analysis and results in quite an easy language. I would have liked to read more about other interpretations of the data by other economists.
On the other hand, I am a chilean and some of the themes shown in this book are very USA-specific, particularly the last chapter, which talks about names v/s success in life.
