I think it would have worked better if the formula she'd set up had been "[new character's:] magical scent, which smells like this, mixed with my [already known so no need to state it again:] magical scent as we did our magical thing". It seemed like McGuire thought we'd have forgotten what her scent was, which even if we had, we could simply have doubled back and checked..

And you know, I didn't even associate her life in the Japanese Tea Gardens with Lily having a Japanese heritage.. *facepalm* So that's embarrassing. Though the Undine are Celtic/Germanic as well, right? I'm not especially well-versed in Japanese folklore, my only exposure thus far is a worn book of Japanese fairytales (done by an English guy!), but I'm not sure how water sprites fit into Japanese culture..

I think what I found strange was that every other named mythical character is consciously of Anglo/Celtic origin; McGuire portraying SF's multicultural background with only two characters of non-Anglo/Celtic origin seems...odd. It also struck me as odd to mention that one of the characters (the Luidaeg, I think? My copy is loaned out at the moment so I can't check) had been there since before the conquest, but not mention if there were any native mythical characters floating about as well, as presumably they exist, if there are also Kitsune.. That said, I have faith in McGuire's world-building, folkloric awareness, and knowledge of just how multifaceted and conflicted SF/California is..]]>
