This is a corking story - told through the eyes of two brothers with distinct narrative styles and distinct takes on the same events. Carey uses this technique quite exquisitely to reveal what the other is not telling us in a story that is all about what is genuine and what isn't. I had a drink with Nick last night and he quite rightly pointed out that my penchant for tricksiness (or is that carelessness) with my timeline flew directly in the face of the commercial qualities of what I'm writing.

So I think I've got some work to do going through and putting things in order.

Given that our tastes are apparently 96% similar then I wouldn't get your expectations too high. Read it in a day at the beach. It has some fun ideas in a skinny decaff latte kind of way.

But its not Atonement.

Its also not that dreary posturing (un)remarkable things book either though. How anyone could finish that book without wanting to go and smack the author is beyond me.

A cracking story, told in Boyd's typically engaging style. Raises an interesting thought in this modern era of spin about where truth lies. Watch out for the movie - this is my only slight criticism that it feels like Boyd almost wrote this with a film in mind. Winslet as the young spy and also playing the daughter. Don't see what the fuss is about this book. It's a good story - sure - but that has nothing to do with the author. What he is responsible for is the turgid writing style. Interior monologue like this is dull. I thought I'd love this book. I didn't. Maybe all the good reviews I read were by sportswriters because from a literary point of view I don't rate this. ]]>
