I guess I buy King's books nowadays mostly out of habit. 13 short stories, different from one another, each with its own appeal. The final story can be considered as gross or super-gross, depending on how strong your stomach is.

What I like about this book is that I sometimes can't guess what's going to happen next. What I don't like is that the young female characters are either a) a prize to be won between two men or 2) a consolation prize for the loser - such a disappointing cliche. But I did enjoy the story and the touches of Wodehousian humor.

I like the book a lot as it shows how a previously intimidated and abused character "blooms", so to speak. The process is enjoyable for me to watch. The villain is also fascinatingly repulsive. I've read it a few times. Although I can see how the long descriptive passages can turn readers off.

Probably Jin Yong's novel with the largest cast of characters. What continues to delight me is the way he pays attention to almost all of these characters, making each distinct from the other. The main themes of the novel are bonds between parents or parental figures and children, brothers, teacher and disciple. Unfortunately, most of the TV adaptations, especially from the 1990's onward, tend to focus heavily on the romantic relationships.
