I couldn't really get into this book, not this first time around anyway. It does strike me as a book that I might like better after reading it again. I usually like mythology, but it seemed a little dull here. When I read books about mythological entities re-personalized, it usually makes me want to delve further into the mythology outside the book, but here it did not. The characters all seemed too one-dimensional, Shadow included. I loved how, instead paragraphs upon paragraphs of description, Butcher throws you straight into this world. The first few chapters were a little slow and hard to read because I was still getting used to the setting and deciding whether I liked certain characters, but it was entirely worth it. For me, the story didn't pick up until Tavi's encounter with the herdbane.

This book is a lot more complex than Butcher's Dresden series. There are so many hints that are unanswered, but that I swear I'm right in guessing.

One thing I found interesting in this book is that I really couldn't tell which side was right or wrong. The reasons for each side's actions are hashed out, and I'm not sure I think either side's argument is stronger than the other's. I could just as easily see this story written from the antagonists' perspective and being just as compelling.
