This book was the equivalent of taking the blue pill from Morpheus in the movie The Matrix. Not pleasant, but very necessary if I'm going to be the author of my own life.

"Live dangerously." --Fredrick Nietzsche

I read this book about...7 years ago? I wasn't a Christian at the time I read it, but I really gravitated toward Eldridge's view of a what a Christian man is. He's not nice, he's not sanitized, he's not all those things that society or women want a Christian man to be. He's a rogue. A dangerous, mysterious, rebellious man...and that is his birthright, given to him by God. Taken in this view, the male characters of the Old and New Testaments...from Abraham to Moses to Jesus Christ...take on a new meaning. These are not men who turn the other cheek, but answered the call to adventure when the call was put to them. For this is the true soul of a man. He does not get his meaning or worth from society, nor from women. He is wild from birth and he wild at heart. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the heart and soul of a man.

There was a time when I put a lot of stock in books such as this one, back when I was looking for these kinds of answers for myself...but once I realized that there were literally thousands upon thousands of these kinds of books in circulation--about discovering your true self based on someone else's criteria of who your true self is--the value and allure wore off. I'm sure it has value for the ones that pick it up; the ones that have traumatically chaotic lives who are just trying to make sense out of the chaos, who choose to find meaning and wisdom in the pages of this book. But ultimately, I feel like if one is trying to find answers regarding their true self in something exterior to themselves, they're merely adhering to a system designed by somebody else. Saying in effect, "Help me to be myself. I submit to your idea of who I am and who I should be and will strive to meet your criteria of that ideal person." This critique is, of course, based on the synopsis I read for this book. I haven't read the book. It probably has some interesting nuggets in it. Thanks for sharing! :)
