The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
I read it to write an article for the Encyclopedia of Popular Fiction (Facts on File) so I must be an authority. ;-) I was amazed at how Diaz seems to build his characters seemingly effortlessly, and yet, it must have taken a lot of effort. I was a little divided about the footnotes and the asides and the repetition of "dude" to refer to somebody. It bugged me in the way 14 year old boy speech is bound to bug you. It was confusing to have that kind of speech intermixed with a lot of detailed historical analysis ...but interesting. The female characters interested me quite a lot, and the traveling from Central America back to the United States and back again. I enjoyed the temporal shifts and the poetic haphazardness, and the switches in perspective. Feel free to unleash your opinions! I've already turned in the article. ]]>
