In my opinion, the Best Nautical series ever written. Based on the life of Admiral Thomas Cochrane it would be easy to write this off as yet another Historical Series. It is anything but and despite the obvious parallels to historical facts, O'Brian does so much more than just present history, he makes it come alive. This is the best of the series, but every one is worth reading. In this inaugural novel we are introduced to Jack Aubrey and Dr Stephen Maturin, two companions who would adventure together for 19 more novels before O'Brian passed away in 2000. (A 21st Novel was unfinished and published as such a few years ago...) Unlike Forrester, who left his main character (Horatio Hornblower) an enigma to most of those around him, O'Brian paints Aubrey in full color, warts an all. Boisterous, blustery and at times pompous, Aubrey is tempered by his great good friend, Stephen Maturin, a truly unique character. As unheroic in both stature and demeanor as the Captain is larger than life, the Doctor is quickly adopted by the crew of the Sophie, a Brig rated as a sloop because of the rank of it's commander. If you stick with this series you will be amazed at how idiosyncratic the British Navy was. You'll be impressed they won anything during the Napoleonic era, let alone swept the seas of it's enemies. But the proof is in the reading, so pick up this book and have at it! ]]>
