I really loved this book but the ending just killed me, I hated the ending. After everything John goes through he doesn't get to be with the person he loves. Of course in the beginning of the book it states that they don't end up together but I still had hope and I thought they weren't gonna end up together for different reasons, but Savannah leaves John! She doesn't wait for him! She said she truly loved him and then she falls in love him someone else while John is away, which is understandable (like The Notebook with Allie and the other guy) but Savannah marries the other guy and then when John comes and visits he asks why she didn't wait for him, that she married the other guy when John would have gotten out of the army and then she says that she thinks about that everyday. She just made me so mad! It was so heartbreaking when John and Savanna were in the parking lot outside of the hospital and he says they can never see each other again b/c she's married and it wouldn't be right to even remain friends. It was a good love story but to me it wasn't true love, not in Savannah's part anyway. What John does for Savannah in the end with his dad's coin collection for Savannah's husband shows how much he loves her and wants her to be happy no matter what pain it causes him. In the end he says "I finally understood what true love meant...love meant that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be." (p.275) ]]>
