We all know about time travel and the ramifications of changing the past, also known as the butterfly effect, but how could making sure that one of the most evil men in history was never born possibly turn out badly? Stephen Fry, actor, comedian, and writer, shows us just what could happen under these circumstances. A really good book, and a fun read, and being a big fan of Mr. Fry's, I could hear his voice all the way through the book which just made it better!

There was a time that I was reluctant to read things written by friends because I thought I might be let down, and if so, how would I reply to them regarding their work. Well, I'm happy to say that Van Reid and now Thomas Lammers have proven my fears groundless!

Tom Lammers second book, Obadiah Gray and the Mystery of the Centurions Testament is easily as good as his first excellent short novel, Augustus Green in the Lair of the Pye-A-Saw. A joy to read and hard to put down, I would find it very difficult indeed to chose between the two books to pick a favorite. Of course since Tom allowed me to draw a cover for his second book it just might hold a loftier position in my heart.

Of course I'll admit that I'd like to see a sequel, or sequels, as the characters are all quite endearing, in particular, one who shows her colors near the end of the book and and leaves me wanting to know more about her. The plot too leaves some openings for a sequel, and I'll admit I'm intrigued by the subject matter and would love to know more.

Time will tell, but in the meantime I unequvically recommend this book!

Up until I read this book when I was 13, I SO wanted to be a Hell's Angel! When I was done with it, I decided I probably wasn't tough enough. (And I'd probably just fall off the bike and hurt myself anyway!)

I can't recall what exactly caught my interest on this book but I'm glad I read it. I do know that I enjoy learning my history through fiction and this added a bit to my knowledge if British history, if only a little.

When I started the book I was expecting a Holmes type book so you can imagine my delight to find elements of pulp heroes like the Shadow and Doc Savage in the makeup of the main character. Barker has "eyes" all over the city and uses several "agents" to help him in his investigations. We've learned a little about him in this first book and I'm curious as to what we'll learn in future adventures.

As I got into the book I realized that the pace was not picking up as I usually expect from a book of this type. The investigation, which we are following at it's own speed, moves along steadily, but does not build slowly to the climax. My thought at that time was that I wasn't going to be able to stay interested, but surprisingly, it works very well. In fact, the climax kind of sneaks up on you very near the end of the book.

This is a first book for the writer and I suspect that his writing will just get better and better as he goes. I know that I'm willing to try out the next book or two to find out!
