This is my third book by Peter Hoeg. I admired the first two (Smilla's Sense of Ice and Borderliners) and I'd have loved this one a lot more if it had a new theme. There's always an experiment by higher powers, economic forces running the scene, children in trouble and people with extra-sensory gifts of one sort or another. I guess it's Hoeg's nightmare, fear or inspiration-or all these. The book is clearly divided in two, and the second book is a genius work. The personal, psychological study of the French and to a certain extent of the Germans tells a different story from most books. Even Romain Gary didn't portray the French that way, since he took sides, while Irene Nemirovsky didn't. It is a cruel joke that a woman who took pains in understanding the human side of conquerors was killed in the camps. However, the book's strength doesn't come from this fact but from the stories in it. ]]>
