I haven't read it entirely...I did watch the film and then checked out the book. The violence in the film is more suggested building up to a key scene for a particular character's redemption. Because of what that character failed to do early on, its particularly needed to underscore his transformation. It's interesting that I see your comment now in light of a talk I listened to about being faced with the decision of protecting the sacredness of life and of a child's right to be a child.
