Haven't seen the movie because I wanted to finish the book first! Crazy. I'll rent the movie when I'm done with the book.

For anyone who is interested in alternatives to the punitive "justice system," this book is an amazing testimony to restorative justice.

Another one from my publisher friend Peter. Great writing, for sure, and a story that deals with familial relationships and race. There's a lot of mystery here, only some of which is solved. The set-up is basically this: There's a train crash in a small town, and a pregnant, teenage black girl shows up at a house looking for the man who lives there (whose daughter is a bit younger than she is). She ends up living with them and falls into a sort of servant-like role (cooking, cleaning, watching after the daughter), while a protective, intimate, curious relationship evolves between all of them.

The characters are fascinating, and I found myself wanting to know what happens to them (and rooting for them). I'm interested to see what else this author writes . . .

Horrible writing, interesting story. I gotta keep up with the teenagers though . . .

One thing I have to point out: Despite the fact that I read all four of these books, I really hate the portrayal of the alleged protagonist as a flailing, helpless girl who needs to be saved by men (well, boys, in this case). It's pretty misogynistic and, in retrospect, pretty maddening that this is what young girls are reading. If you're a teacher of teenagers, might be worth bringing this up with your students.
