Absolutely. We asked this question (or something very like it) in our interviews in the latest edition of SLQ. And I've been thinking about it a lot the past couple days. I think for some it is, in fact, a stepping stone. In light of conversations about it in Randall Brown's office at Zoetrope, responses to the interview question, and my having devoured Quick Fiction 12 last night, I've realized that for others, like me, writing longer stuff is a stepping stone to flash. I have a number of aborted attempts at novels, from which I've gleaned the crux of the stories and written some of my favorite flashes.

Writing in a longer form allows (and maybe even requires) a more leisurely pace. It's possible (for me, it's even likely) to read a novel and sort of space out on whole paragraphs. You do that with flash and you'll get nothing out of it. While reading QF last night, I found that I was in more of a novel-reading mode, and I had to scan back many, many times to really get what I was reading. The pieces in the issue were, on average, brilliant. Were I to read them the same way I read a novel, though, I wouldn't have taken them in to nearly the same degree.

Writing good flash is not easy. Reading it, similarly, is not easy. Reading a good novel, for me, is almost effortless. They are, to my mind, totally different art forms, and require different sensibilities of both their practitioners and their audiences.

I really don't like caging flash within too tight a definition, perhaps because I'm trying to find 80 excellent examples of flash to publish each year. So I love surprises within the form. That said, one of my favorite forms of flash seems to be the condensation of a lot of story into one moment. I think your "Misdirections" does this especially well--there're a ton of things going on in the relationship between the couple, but they all play out in the brief journey of setting the mouse free. I think also that a lot of flash writers try to go for THE moment of the larger narrative, and I think that's a huge mistake. Again referring to your story, I'm certain that there are larger moments within this couple's relationship, greater epiphanies, etc., but this more quiet moment contains everything that is needed, while larger-scale moments would require far more space to breathe.
