Wayne wrote: "Yes, I have figured out the reasons behind it. Wanna know why? Because no one writes to scare anymore. They soak their pages with sex and creatures that want to have sex with human women..."

True, modern horror is so unlike horror fiction from the 1980s, when Clive Barker and the splatterpunks were putting out subtle, sexless horror stories.

On a less sarcastic note, every time I hear someone talk about "the death of horror," I wish they'd be honest and admit it's simply that the current trend in horror doesn't appeal to them.

Rob wrote: "You guys have to remember....when the first Halloween came out, there WAS no Friday the 13th or any other slasher film."

There were at least 2 slashers already released - Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974) and Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (a.k.a Twitch of the Death Nerve, 1971).

Not only were kills in various Friday the 13th films (most notably the spear through the couple in bed) stolen from Bay of Blood, the scene in John Carpenter's Halloween with Michael on one side of a translucent bathroom door & his would-be victims on the other side is more than merely reminiscent of a scene Bava's 1971 classic.

Bay of Blood also has scenes from the killer's POV, years before it became a slasher cliche.

With that, Rob Zombie did a great job updating Halloween for 21st century audiences, and I'm looking forward to his upcoming sequel.
I didn't mean to suggest that LTROI isn't a horror movie because it's slow, though that doesn't help any. The Shining may start slowly, but it undeniably crescendos into a full-bore horror classic. LTROI starts slowly and never really goes anywhere - at least not anywhere that makes me feel dread, suspense, revulsion, fear or any other emotion one might expect a horror film to provoke.

The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance is a collection of vampire storie, but that doesn't make it a collection of horror stories.
