Ooooh, majicks! :)

Jim Butcher's Codex Alera springs to mind. All magic is done by employed the strength of "furies" - which I interpret to be spirits (of earth, water, metal and air). No-one's a magician in Alera, they're fury-crafters. I fell in love with Butcher's system of magic right away in 'Furies of Calderon' and it remains one of my favourite series.

Hot damn, is Mr Willingham ever going to slip up? I hope not. 'The Good Prince' is another enormously entertaining chapter in the Fables series, this time featuring Flycatcher, who ventures forth on a highly dangerous mission amidst Fabletown's preparations for all-out war against the adversary. Love ensues. Because I just LOVE these books.

Half-way through. So far, so very excellent. I can't get enough of Banks's Culture-verse, and the writing here is, as usual, fabulous. It may be premature, giving 5 stars at the half-way mark, but somehow I'm thinking it won't be.

Understandable, though, that it's not to everyone's taste. :)
One word: crass. Two words: Offensive, even. Three words: Great art, though.

Some more words: This was my first Garth Ennis book, bought solely on the raving recommendation of the guy in the bookstore, and while it is highly vulgar in places (and I'm not joking when I say that it puts the 'graphic' in 'graphic novel), the premise is an entertaining one: "Who's Watching The Watchmen" always holds a lot of potential, and Ennis' group of CIA-employed, drug-enhanced humans who police the world's superheroes surely lives up to expectations. I could have done without the gratuitous sex, mind.

I was a bit disturbed that in the World According To Garth, every superhero is somehow despicable and in need of some righteous application of physical violence, but all in all, I had fun reading this volume and wouldn't mind picking up the next one to see where the story goes next.
