Yeah, there's no such thing as too deadpan for me. I was cracking up throughout the whole thing. The humor was bleeding through the pores of the entire film, in my opinion.

Hey Alex, thanks for friending me! I should probably update my profile on here, as I just moved to Boston a little over a month ago... but I'm sure I'll be back in PA eventually (unfortunately) :P

I agree with the philosophical points presented, as simple as they may be. The illustrations are what make it all worth it.

and so but I just finished this and am pretty much basically flabbergasted by the sheer enormity of Wallace's wit and simultaneous ability to create an entire world and then gradually expose its geopolitical and cultural nuances in wildly unique and disparate ways via e.g. a mosaic of seemingly unrelated stories and details and explanations and descriptions and endnotes, all of which in reality actually contribute to one another and come together to reveal an incredibly complex but at the same time wildly enjoyable narrative about freedom, ambition, and addiction (with, gasp, a little bit of real live optimism thrown in here and there for good measure in between!)

fuck.

A delightful classic. Very funny at parts, sweet and sad at others. Really sets itself apart from other children's fairy tales by including the aftermath of the journey: death, politics, and war. The Hobbit will always be one of my favorites and a source of many fantastic memories.

I'd give it a 3.5/5. It's pretty good, but the entire last third of the book is so new-agey it's ridiculous (and this coming from someone who's usually sympathetic to new-age language). Overall it has a great message and preaches tolerance, respect, and love. It just doesn't dig incredibly deep into the issues, and, like I said, the third part is so out-of-character for the book as a whole. It's like the author dozed off and started sleep-writing... very odd. Again, I sympathize with new-age sentiments... but in this book it just seemed out of place and too much. All the same, it's a nice, short, inspiring read. I do recommend it.
