"A very quick read. Interesting to see how our daily "news headlines" come to be and how the individuals are impacted.

This book was very powerful. I enjoyed the fact that death was sharing the story. The writing style was refreshing. It captures human emotion at its best and at its worst. I lived in Germany and visited a lot of the places in the book so I was fascinated with the characters and the outcome. This was a very emotional novel and one that I will read again....less

Overall I enjoyed the book because I always thought circuses were scary. I got the creeps when they would come to town and wondered what life was like in a circus. If I could give half stars I would put this at 3.5. It's not a feel good book in any sense. I enjoyed the present accounts as the narrator was describing getting old and how it really surprises you when you get to that point in life. I couldn't relate at all to the circus life but I enjoyed reading about it. The ending was a little bizarre and unrealistic (after the narration was complete)....less

I enjoyed this book. It helped me gain a more thorough understanding of life in Afghanistan, especially when the Taliban took control. It's amazing how events like this flash across the news and how rarely I am actually able to comprehend how individuals are impacted. The story was very well written and pulls you into the beauty and horror of the individuals lives....less

This is an amazing account of one man's struggle to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. One of the things I found fascinating about this book is that he understands and lived in these areas during the extremist uprising. As the Saudi's brought their money into these remote areas and built schools that churn out jihadists, the author was struggling to provide a balanced education to boys and girls. If our country's answer continues to be "shock and awe", we will only continue to embolden the jihadist movement. ...less

This book was a tough one to rate. The writing style was great and it seemed to pull me into the settling of the West which I really enjoyed. I struggled with the main character (the writers mother) and could never really relate to her. The lessons learned by the characters are tough ones and it makes life harsh and unforgiving because of their stubbornness. ...less

I'm on the last 50 pages and have to say this is one of the best books I have ever read. It has changed me as a person and is one that I will read again. When an author can capture what is really important in life and you feel the emotions the character is going through as if they were your own then it is something beautiful. Next time I read this book it will be when I'm traveling through Italy....less

This is a quick read and if you want to be frustrated with the current political/business environment then read this one. I think that Mr. Iacocca really pinpoints some qualities that are important in true leaders. After a while you feel like you've signed up for the rantings and ravings of an old man but some of the points really hit home for me. I enjoyed this book because it got me emotionally involved....less
