I wish I could mostly fill-in the 5th star because this puppy is very close to a 5 in my opinion. The author's writing style and story-telling are wonderful. Very witty. Very creative. So many of his characters are fleshed-out and dynamic. I loved this book! I could have done without the details of the Octopus's Garden...but maybe the discomfort that some of us readers may feel during this part of the story is a deliberate attempt by the author to make us empathize a bit with this sort of liminal, vulnerable and awkward phase of Cal's self-defining. I get the sense that he is a little uncomfortable, too.
And as a random aside, I couldn't stop laughing about the author's musings on "the Hair Belt"--my husband loves to find ways to refer to my Greek unibrow...and I'm only 1/8th! This is a great book to listen to in the car. We had to pause it a million times for Miles to ask me questions about it. He really enjoyed it but seemed quite fixated on all the deaths that occur throughout the story.
