There are three narrators, and they lived different lives in London during 60s-80s. Two of them (the bent cop and the serial killing journalist,) tell their stories in first person perspective, while the 'outsider' (Colin Wilson's term) PTSD veteran's perspective is told in the third person. While this is already out of the ordinary, Arnott uses these perceptions to achieve an unexpected twist toward the end of the story.

I'm currently re-reading because this novel reminded me of why I read books for fun. I listened to the audio book version narrated by Neil Gaiman and ordered a British edition for the art. The American editions have Dave McKean's artwork, which were surprisingly bad. Chris Riddell's illustrations here are gorgeous, stylish, and embodies illustration before tablet drawn digital art. This story might be Gaiman's best, one of the reasons being that unlike his stories meant for adults, he doesn't wander off the plot.
