A good premise, but sloppily executed. A man who has always harbored dark, murderous fantasies sees two people kill someone. He decides that he simply must get to know these people, that they must all go on a murder spree together. The people, of course, are terrified.

What I really liked about "Red" is that it's a revenge story. An old man and his dog are out fishing, and three random teenagers come along. They shoot the dog, killing it, for no reason whatsoever. The old man is continually denied justice, and so must go get it himself.

The scariest thing about this book is that it's loosely based on a true story.
Set in 1950's suburbia (Wholesomeville, USA), a woman must take in her two neices after their parents are killed in a car crash. The woman begins systematically abusing the older girl, a teenager, physically, mentally, and sexually, and lets her sons and their friends do it too. Eventually, it becomes a game to the neighborhood children.

I love the characters that Ann Patchett creates. She creates some fantastic characters in "The Magician's Assistant." She just doesn't really give them anything to do.
Sabine is an assistant to gay magician, Parsifal. Despite Parsifal's obvious sexual preference, Sabine is madly in love with him, and they get married for tax purposes. After Parsifal and his partner both die, Sabine discovers Parsifal's family living in Michigan (I think, I forget), and goes to see them.
Great characters, but not much seems to happen to them. The novel feels slow, sluggish, even during exciting moments, but the characters (especially Sabine) kept my interest long enough for me to finish the book. ]]>
