I can say that, even when I pulled this book out of its package, got remnants of black stuff all over me, cursed several times, shook it over the sink to get all the black particles off while still cursing and wondering if my copy was defective, the mess was totally worth it. It made the whole experience that much better.

Even though I didn't even like Marianne Engel the majority of the time, she still fascinated me. The nameless narrator is the type of character I reluctantly admire. Cynical, with a decent sense of humor, who, through a series of events becomes a better person. Now, there are plenty of hidden meanings in this book and I'm pretty sure I didn't pick up on half of them. (Note to self: refresh memory of Dante's Inferno asap.) This is the kind of book that each time you read it you discover things you hadn't noticed the previous time. I will look forward to that.

Incredible weaving of tales from centuries past with the current one. The writing style made this 500 page book seem like 200 pages. I wanted more.
