This book made me want to cheat.
This was the first book in a long time where I wanted to flip to the end and read the last chapter. I'd go back and read the entire book, of coure, but with the knowledge of what he's leading up to. I have a friend who does that with every book. She just can't stand the suspense. I've never done that--even with over-hyped novels where knowing who died or whodunnit is part of being in the (fan) club. But with The Roaad, I wanted to. If you haven't yet, read the first 50 pages and tell me you don't feel the same way!
I didn't do it, though, and I am glad, in retrospect.
The Road is extremely vivid, even with one of the predominant images being darkness, and reading about their journey made me feel, in some ways, like I was taking it with them. The particularly hard parts were difficult to read. The blesings made me smile. I, too, was really scared.
But mostly I read with a furrowed brow. Disturbed, scared, freaked out. Ultimately not caring (as I thought I would) about the specifics of what had happened and how they got there or where, specifically, they were, or even what would, at the end of the book, happen to them. I just read for journey, and as they struggled day to day, not knowing what was going to happen, so did I.

I wanted to like this book. I wanted to enjoy the jumpy narrative. I wanted to keep up with the characters. I wanted to overlook the plot holes. Most of all, I wanted to believe.
