After hearing others rave about the series, I have to say I was a little disappointed in the first book. I thought the writing was sophomoric. I found myself trying to rework the sentences when I really wanted to get lost in the book. I also had a hard time reconciling Sookie's age with her vernacular. Much of her terminology seemed "old-maid-ish" to me. But I am hopeful that Harris finds her footing in the later books, so I'll probably read a few more before writing these off.

This was interesting from a historical perspective. Because I know Anne Rice is always thorough in her research, I was pretty comfortable accepting the story she weaved as a good representation of the times. Even more interesting to me though, were her author's notes.

Love Anne Rice's use of imagery and the way she merges her knowledge of history, mythology and religion to weave her story.
