"The best book about writing I've ever read. Inspiring, down-to-earth, even mean sometimes. Anne Lamott doles out advice, personal experiences, hope, and tough love in equal measure.

The story of Christopher McCandless who graduated from Emory, gave all his savings to charity, and ventured out west and ultimately, to Alaska, where he died of starvation. Krakauer tracks his journey from the suburbs to the desert to Mexico and up to the Northwest and has done extensive interviews with those closest to Christopher. And while he can't help but be a little subjective ("I was just like him! A play-by-play account of the battle of Gettysburg, told from the points of view of Longstreet, Chamberlain, Lee, and many more soldiers who made tough choices, acted heroically, and fought in what would be the turning point in the Civil War. The writing's a bit messy, but the characters come to life, and Shaara describes the battles so that we can understand the thinking and strategies behind them. Lee Child's newest novel, Bad Luck and Trouble, was one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time. The prose was stripped down, the hero Jack Reacher was wonderfully flawed and vulnerable, and best of all, everything that happened was logical and we got to follow the characters every detailed step of the way. I was so happy with it, I bought Child's earlier books, and while Killing Ground shows hints of these qualities I admired so much, it's still very much a first novel; it's too long, a little cliched, and sometimes it tries too hard to show us how tough it is.
