Though I only gave this book two stars, I'm a bit on the fence about it. I seriously considered abandoning this book after about ten pages, because I couldn't stand the narrative voice and there didn't seem to be a plot to hang my hat on. I stuck with it, though, and there was a certain pay-off by the end, as the narrative voice evened out and the plot came together. Still, I'm left wishing there had been more. (less)

There's humor, there's young love (a lot of unrequited love going on, as a matter of fact), and there's a whole heap of interesting characters that are quirky without being completely over-the-top.(less)

Dowd so brilliantly gets into the mind of her narrator, a twelve-year old boy with Asperger's syndrome, that not only does his character shape the motivation for his actions, but his character eventually becomes an organic part of the plot. Character and plot become indistinguishable in a sort of literary fractal, as pattern superimposes upon pattern. And it's a mystery, solvable if you pay attention to clues.(less)

This book was like Billy Creekmore, Part II. Orphanage, joining a circus, finding family. The pacing was slow and haphazard, the writing was fair at best, full of the “new clichés”: “I boarded [the boat:] with a heavy rock for a heart” (162). Really, what 13-year old boy would think this way?(less)

This novel could have been a great book, as it has all the elements of a good tale: a boy in an orphanage, hardships in the mining industry, joining a circus. But it wanders all over. There is no major thread that holds each section together. It is chock-full of coincidences, and plots points seem to happen at random, according to the author's will. Disappointed. (less)
