This book probably foreshadowed my love of boy/boy romance, though so very subtly. I read it in sophmore English as part of an assignment on banned books and it broke my heart wide open.
I was so naive then. I didn't get the "homosexual subtext" that so many people saw. It took a much later reading, when my own life had gone to very queer places, for me to see and appreciate that. But there is so much more than that. Sure, you can read it as a tragic romance if you want- it is absolutely there, Finny and Gene are definitely love each other, but maybe more importantly it's about betrayal and forgiveness and how the world was being changed by war.
I do back to it again and again and I always find something more.

I love the idea of this book, but though it IS fairly interesting, it's a bit disappointing at times too. Ramsland's writing style is a bit too rambly and anecdotal for me. She tends to jump to something new- just when I'm getting interested. This one is not nearly as confusing and meandering as Piercing the Darkness: Undercover with Vampires in America Today however.

I do recommend it for writers of horror and dark fantasy. The section on "body cheese" alone is worth the price of admission (although NOT for the squeamish)

In my opinion, you really can't call yourself an Urban fantasy fan if you haven't read this book. This is one of, if not THE book that started it all.

There are fairies (but don't call them that if you know what's good for you) of every shape and size, lust, love, rock n' roll and a war between Seelie and Unseelie courts- what more could you want?

How about characters you care for almost instantly, magic that somehow makes sense even when it doesn't, and don't forget- the magic of music.

This is no cut and dry good vs. evil tale either, like all great urban fantasies it's a whole palette of shades of grey, although you do know who's side you come down on- it's not entirely ambivalent, like some of Caitlin R, Kiernan's work- but you definitely see the beauty in the darkness.

And woven through it all is an honest to goodness amazing love story.
So very highly recommended.
