Nope, couldn't finish it. Horrible writing, stupid self important characters with barely one dimension to them, and a philosophy behind it that only speaks to privileged idiots with no common sense, old disillusion people, or teenagers trying to "find themselves."

Grow up and read something worthwhile. Want a real story about overcoming barriers erected by those who don't understand? Read "The Autobiography of Malcolm X."

I read this is one night, sitting outside on a nice night in Chicago. It was alright in terms of writing style, but it felt almost like the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

They walk, they sleep, they walk, they sleep, they eat, then there's a fight. Rinse and repeat.

Also, I absolutely hated the ending and it put me in a bad mood for nearly a full day afterwards.

What a fun book, though almost a bit TOO flip at times. Mary Roach leads the reader through a morbid yet fascinating and often ignored process - what happens to us when we're dead. If you can stomach the material (her wit and silliness help, though not much in the airplane chapter for me) then this is a must read.

Interesting if not problematic insight into the trials of working and surviving in our economy and culture of work in the United States. While I enjoyed the insight into some of the less than enjoyable aspects of our economy, I was troubled by the general premise of the book.

The ability to "pass" as someone of the lower class, even for the so-called right reasons, is something that just can't be done without problems. The author will still retain the schooling, gestures, speech, and cultural knowledge (social capital in Marxist terms) that she gained while becoming well off enough to go on her journey. She might have left off her education, but how was her handwriting? Did she misspell words on applications on purpose? What skills did she list on her applications? How did she do in interviews, possibly weaving her skills as a homemaker seamlessly into supposed qualifications for a cleaning or waitressing job?

I thought it was a needed book and can be an amazing jump off point for a lot of issues. Yet those issues should include the things listed above. Read it but question what it says truly about our society today.

Holy mother, I wanted to love this book. I was living in Ireland at the time and one of my friends from Limerick gave me this book. Yet it is horribly written. I can usually flow through books pretty quickly but this was torture. I got through it but compared to what happens in NYC and Chicago, the gang wars just paled in comparison. Hell, read about Belfast or a better history of Limerick and you'll get more about of recent Irish history.

Fascinating book from a master. Can be a bit weird flow wise if you aren't aware that these are several short stories put together, but you'll appreciate it even more knowing that it was not thought out as one single volume but a series of shorts connected under one amazing volume. Themes of humanity, love, death, art, colonialism, etc. are flowing throughout. One of the greats by a master of the genre.
