I went on a little road trip this weekend, which gave me the opportunity to hack away at the overly ambitious pattern I've been working on as a Christmas gift. (I'm beginning to realize I mean next Christmas.) At some point, I was sitting at the kitchen table of the friends we were staying with, and I picked up this little metal nubbin. This looks really familiar, I thought, and we all discussed what it could possibly be. We get in the car to go home, drive an hour, and then, when I go to shift the cloth so I can work on the next section, it dawns on me: it's the fastener for the hoop. Arg!

To the Sally Army! Away! I'm always looking for a reason to go to the thrift store, and the boy wanted to get some buttons for reasons too weird to explain, so off we went. I found not just one but two hoops, a bunch of Aida cloth, and more books than I will ever bother to review.

This one stands out though, because it is so completely whack. So whack! Did you know that there's a National Pie Day? (Jan 23) Of course you did! How about National Pet Week? (First week of May) National Aviation Day? (Aug 19) Or - oo oo - Bachelor's Day? (Feb 29) There's nothing that turns Bachelor's Day into "Bachelor's" Day like giving your unmarried male friends an embroidered picture of a bunch of woodland creatures. I have to type out the corresponding text, because it's so crazy it took my breath away:

"Ladies, it's Leap Year, and your turn to do the asking. Tradition has it that, during this year, women have the upper hand when it comes to asking for a date, or even proposing marriage. But there is one day during Leap Year when men are not fair game - Bachelor's Day. So put your ammunition away for the day and wait until tomorrow to go hunting."

Gong! Omfg! There is a class of books my husband and I refer to as "in the usual manner" books: books that were written long enough ago that they allude constantly to things that used to be common knowledge, but now that knowledge is specialized or refers to industries or concepts that have ceased to exist. Cookbooks are guilty of this more often than most, as I think food production in America has changed drastically since even the 80s. (My favorite cookbook is the 1984 edition of The Fanny Farmer Cookbook, and it has its fair share of "in the usual manner"; my favorite section is on making hamburgers. Sure, I'll just bust out my meat grinder.)

I find it hard to believe that this Leap Year Sadie Hawkins thing was ever common knowledge, but I am completely in love with how unknowingly hostile this otherwise cutesy section is. War of the sexes indeed! I can just see some woman stabbing the needle in and out of the cloth, smiling an evil smile when she thinks of the look on her lover's face when he opens the package and realizes he's going to have to hang this thing on the wall or never get laid again.

I'm a big fan of the idea of Subversive Cross Stitch, partially because I think that the subversiveness of women's work is coded in its DNA, a sort of voiceless protest. Look at what I've made for you! The vast majority of crafts are gendered, and "in the usual manner" sometimes refers to a cultural consensus on what activities are right and normative, and for whom. It's fascinating to see how quickly the usual manner can shift. (less)

I love Halloween. I love that it's both transgressive and social, sending kids out of the house to threaten neighbors for candy. I love that it's well hated by all kinds of people: not Christian enough for certain kinds of Christians, not secular enough to be accessible to other religious adherents, setting off a tizzy of anxiety from parents and authority figures about razor blades and sex offenders and vandalism. I was a pretty law-abiding teenager, but I remember fondly soaping windows, smashing pumpkins and toilet papering the house of the asshat who spent the previous 5 Halloweens smashing my boyfriend's pumpkins. As an adult I feel pangs of sadness about the fact that probably it was the asshat's mother who cleaned up the mess, but then, when it was my turn for my house to get egged, my mother handed me a bucket and told me to get to it. I didn't even protest how it was unfair, because it wasn't.

In honor of the fact that it's Halloween, I'm going to be a little transgressive. I don't much like this book. The movie was not just better, but worlds better. I know it's almost a hobby of readers to bellyache about how the book was better, but not so in this case. I mean, it hit all the marks, like an actor that's been doing it so long it's second nature to step to the right piece of tape on the floor at the right moment. Sweet baboo, the flying ace, oh brother, all these things dress the tale, but it's weird and not that compelling. For an embarrassingly long time, I lumped Peanuts in with the Family Circus & similar dreck, assuming that it was a bunch of twee nonsense that sold an idealized vision of childhood and the family, but though I am loathe to admit it, I was wrong. Peanuts is crushingly miserablist at times, the final panel often ending with a sigh, Charlie Brown's resignation functioning as a bleak joke. There are no parents, no teachers, just kids speaking to voices outside the frame of the strip. Maybe it's that this isn't a strip, but a book adapted from the movie adapted from the strip. Too many times through the copy machine.

I live in Minneapolis, and watched with horror when St Paul, the city across the river and Schulz's birthplace, canonized Schultz after his death, strung streamers of preciousness over his work. The powers that be put up barfy statues of Snoopy on his house all over the place, no doubt to invoke some childlike wonder from me when I go shopping. I hate when childlike wonder is used as a marketing device. You can take your commercialist childlike wonder and shove it, which is more or less what happens to poor crazy Linus after his evening in the <s>Garden of Gethsemane</s> the pumpkin patch, rejected by his friends, abandoned by his girlfriend, unvisited by the Great Pumpkin. It's the semi-sociopathic Lucy that comes and ushers him to bed, a sweet moment of caring out of the least empathetic person in the strip. Peanuts is often understood through the lens of Schultz's Christianity, but this is the Christianity of stoicism and those gospel songs about how great things will be when you die. Linus's night of faith doesn't get him much but heartache because faith is by definition unreasonable and sometimes anti-social, but he wakes up the next morning alive still to the wonder of the Great Pumpkin and the hope that the next time will be different.

We can greet this all with a sigh, but as an unbeliever of long standing, it's the sigh of longing. Linus misses out on all the fun of Halloween, like the friend I had growing up who had evangelical parents. We'd knock on her door, decked out in our demonic costumes. Her mother, lips pressed in a hard line, would drop fundamentalist comics into our bags, and we'd wave back at my friend who was both horrified and grateful that we'd come by. We'd say thank you and her mother would more or less slam the door in our faces. The next morning the street would be littered with spindled and defaced fundamentalist propaganda, but I always brought mine home to my parents who would cluck and help us divide our candy and extract the taxes that are every parent's due. But on nights other than Halloween her mom was blithe with her faith, even if she was still a little mean.

It's Halloween, and the seasonal flu has infected my kids like the stalking predator it is, the evil microscopic monster hijacking their little bodies so they they become fevered boogar factories coughing clouds of infection everywhere they go. I'm half considering just hanging signs on them that say “H1N1” when we go out tonight. Trick or treat. We're coming for you. (less)

(and talk about preaching to the choir…) -- i haven't read jonathan safran foer's novels and fuckoff what he's ever written or what he ever will write: he's a great man for this book alone. he's a great man by default, perhaps, because most people are such evil and miserable cunts. but, no. set apart from a race of miserable cunts he's still a great man.

the problem, really, with hitler and stalin and mao and all those other guys is not what they did but what they didn't do. a bad case of extreme short-sightedness. they set their crosshairs on specific targets when they really should have gone after the destruction of the entire human race. (logistically i know this is problematic; you need to start small. but i can dream, eh?) if i found a magic lantern, before the genie uttered 'and your first wish can't be for a million more wishes', i'd already have made my only wish: that every human being on the planet be instantly transformed into a dog except for me (and rosario dawson. or marisa tomei. decades of silence and masturbation and i'd probably end up throwing myself off a bridge after a week-long romp with a border collie). and i'd hang out with all of them. i'd toss a few hundred into a swimming pool and do laps. i'd play tag in forests with them. i'd take them swimming in oceans and lakes. and then i'd retire to my cabin, start a fire, pour myself and rosario a cold beer, stuff about 3 or 4 hundred dogs into a large room, and me and my woman'd take a long nap with/on them.

the human race is capable of such acts of beauty and goodness and life is not easy, right?, there is little clarity: it is seldom easy to know what is truly right or wrong. but factory farms? the torture and intense suffering of creatures weaker than us? a no brainer. and all the war and peaces, all the mona lisas, all the moonlight sonatas, all the oskar schindlers and MLKs cannot possibly justify what we've done to one another, what we've done to the planet we inhabit, and most offensively, to the rape and utter destruction of the animal kingdom.

my dream scenario: as a result of the evil actions perpetrated on animals, a variant of swine or bird flu gets ultra-deadly, goes airborne, and wipes us all out. yes. we have reached the point in which the kanamits should come and 'serve' us. we've earned it. and we should know what it's like to be on the other end.

as human beings we simply must lie to ourselves about much -- but not about this. it is not necessary. but we do. and for what? for the least interesting of our five senses? because stuff tastes good? we tolerate factory farms because stuff is 'yummy'?
evil and miserable cunts.

do i sound too angry? hyperbolic? unstable? juvenile? like some blood-throwing PETA nut? am i 'not going to convince anyone with this tone'? good. i don't want to convince anyone. i just want the human-eradicating disease to come.
and come soon.

and if considering a vote for this review, understand that it's almost totally certain that if i knew you i'd wanna toss you in a woodchipper.
keep your vote, miserable cunt.(less)
