This book is okay. It's my second Allende novel and I felt like the writing never really measured up to the genius of "House of Spirits." It's a very interesting read, detailing the settling of Chile by Spain from the viewpoint of Ines Suarez, the ...more

Loved this novel. I'm a big fan of fantastic realism, and I felt this novel was on par with G.G. Marquez (I know, blasphemy)! I actually even enjoyed aspects of it more than Marqez due partly to the female perspective. I'll be putting more Allende...more

Maybe a 3.5. Several hilarious, laugh-out-loud parts, nearly-peed-in-my-pants parts. But also several bitter, sourgrapes-ish, defensive parts. But I do love Tina Fey's zany sense of humor (even though it's pretty filthy).

Cute children's book. Not on par with "The Secret Garden" or anything, but it's a cute little read.

“I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study, and the passionate possession of all Texans.”

“Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies for instance.”
