So it's after 4 am, and now that I've stopped crying all over my bedsheets I feel that I can't sleep until I say something about this book.
It's a post-apocalyptic elegy for the world as we know it, and in some ways even the goodness of humanity. A father and son are left alive after a global disaster that is never explained, following a road that they hope will lead them to hope. This is the premise, but not the reason why I feel this is such a great book.
I don't know if it is something McCarthy does in other books, but his sentences are truncated... really clauses actually, describing the dead surroundings in sharpened bursts of perception that bring us closer to the characters. The destroyed world is delineated with heartbreaking tenderness and ruthlessness, my imagination was easily convinced.
More than anything, though, the goodness of the characters themselves was so deep and real as to be unsettling. In the telling of this bleak story, I found an underlying hope and love that was impossible to ignore.
The last paragraph of this book is dazzling, if I am allowed to pick out one paragraph. The writing in this book makes me irrational enough to want to write, as if the words in it are so inspiring that the only thing I can do is try to mimic the act of saying something.
What a condition we humans are plagued with, and how well this author knows it!...less
