I read an interview with Bob Clark – the director of this – who said that at one of meetings they had to discuss a possible sequel, there was the young John Carpenter. It must be particularly galling for him then that Halloween is normally seen as the start of that cycle of horror films built around occasions (Friday the 13th, Prom Night and so on). But I guess the main reason the later film is always credited is that Black Christmas is an okay film, while Halloween is touched by genius.

There are murders at Christmas at a sorority house, and in typical fashion the young women are whittled down until there is only one left. The characterisations are not particularly good, neither is the acting, while the plot has an enormous hole you could force a giant Christmas tree through – if a young woman has gone missing and the police are involved, wouldn’t they think to search the house she lives in? (Interestingly, John Saxon is the lead policeman, which suggests Wes Craven was taking notes as well). It’s a fairly entertaining watch – particularly when adding a little grit to festivities at this time of year – but there’s nothing overly exciting about it.

Two questions:

Has anyone seen the remake?

Didn’t Margot Kidder ever look young?
