I had to read this for a book club (which now I actually will not be going to) and I really did not like it. I love lesbian fiction, but this book moved glacially slow. It was over 300 pages, and could easily have been edited to 200 or less. Basically it's a romance between a flight attendant and museum curator. Curator is bi and 25, flight attendant is les and 40-something. Both are from different cultures. Curator is Canadian, flight attendant is Indian/Irish. They are an appealing couple, but not much happens in this novel.

This book has the wrong title. It's not really an expose of gay men in hip-hop. It's a memoir of Terrance Dean himself. He's lived a complicated life--came from a broken home, there was AIDS, drugs, a struggle to climb up the corporate ladder, too much casual sex and not enough love. Here and there Dean treats us to blind items of who might be gay in hip-hop. It's hard to guess who he's talking about half the time, though. Some are obvious guesses though. Not always well-written (there are several glaring typos, and just a lack of polish throughout), but still a fascinating glimpse into an underground culture.

This is an interesting book, about a guy who found out his mom was gay when he was an adolescent. He's very funny at times, and the book brings up issues about what it's like to grow up with a gay parent, issues those "touchy-feely" books never get into. But the book also drags and is a bit all over the place, focusing less, sometimes, on the mom, and more on Troy. Overall, a good read. Worth picking up.

This was an amazing book, and much better than I expected. I was a huge fan of SNL in the time CF was on it, but not a huge fan of Chris Farley myself. His style of humor never appealed to me. Just personal taste I guess. I always thought he was kind of this dumb guy. But this book opened my eyes. Farley was a complex human being whose comedy covered up for a serious lack of self-esteem and addiction problems. The book is highly readable, as it is not told in narration, but in quotes from family, friends and co-workers. Tragic, heartbreaking, humorous. One of the best books of the year.

Really good book. Weiner gets better with each book and she is really at her peak at this point. Emotionally wrenching at times, but well worth the read. I liked this even better than Good in Bed, which has the same character.
