Saw this movie when it was in the theatres and thought it was a cute John Hughe's type teen comedy. I really enjoyed it, and didn't realize it was based on a book, so when I stumbled on it at a friend's house, I immediately asked to borrow it. Excellent little book which accurately conveys the way I used to think and feel as a teenager growing up in the punk scene. All raw emotion and broken heart mixed together with a hope for something new. The music is a huge part of the book and I'm still feeling the bassline a week later. Though the drums are kinda missing.

I grabbed this simply due to Del Toro's name being attached.

It borrows heavely from some of the elements from his Blade 2 film, and can be overly dramatic..but that's actually what I like about it. It's like an updated version of the cheesy horror movies that I grew up watching, without the modern trappings of being self-referencial or tongue-in-cheek. it's a bit slow-going at first, letting the tension build, but once it get's going, it's wonderfully cheesey and creepy and fun!

can't wait for the next one!
fair enough, fair enough.
i REALLY don't have the appreciation for 60's wackiness, that say..Tom Katers seems to have. I just can't get into that stuff. But for some reason, even though it did have those aspects, it felt more timeless and a bit more high-brow to me. silliness with a point, as opposed to silly for silly's sake.
for some reason, while i don't appreciate the silver age of comics as much as i maybe should in the eyes of my peers, i really enjoy modern takes on the silver age, if that makes sense. i'd rather read a modern telling of Dick Grayson as robin, then going back and reading the originals.

sometimes reading Grant Morrison's words makes me feel smarter. other times, like i'm back in school, learning my abc's.
this one kept me perfectly balanced between the two.

Superman stories should always bring with them the sort of awe that this one inspires. brilliant.
