Tamora Pierce is AWESOME! I don't like the early books, and the Tortall books, as much as I like the Circle of Magic books, though. The first quartet starts when the four children are 10-11; the second (The Circle Opens) takes place when they're 14 - those are a little darker than the first four - and then there's a single book when they're 18, called "The Will of the Empress," which is fantastic. Lately, she's been adding some Circle books from earlier years, too. And there's a new series about a girl named Beka Cooper, that totally rocks, as well! Those are set in the Tortall-universe, 200 or so years before Alanna, but I enjoyed the first, mostly because it's really a mystery/police procedural more than a fantasy novel. (Not that I mind fantasy at all; I just don't enjoy Tortall that much.) And Tamora just writes wonderfully well!

Don't know how 'literary' these are, but they're exeptional examples of their genre: Jennifer Crusie has some wonderfully written romantic comedies; her dialogue in particular is fabulous. Terry Pratchett, for anyone who's into comedy and fantasy. My personal favorites are the books about the Ankh-Morpork Watch; they're screwy police procedurals set in the biggest town on the flat Discworld. Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels/Barbara Mertz; impossible to describe in a few words, but an incredible writer. You just have to read her to see. Lois McMaster Bujold. The Vorkosigan books are sci-fi, space opera, sort of, with some Georgette Heyer thrown in for good measure. The few books written in the Chalion series so far, are wonderful too. She's the kind of writer who can make you weep with joy at her language, while at the same time being very accessible. Tasha Alexander, who writes the Lady Emily Ashton historical mysteries. Wonderfully written, nails the historical period, but not dark at all. I could go on, but this is probably enough for now. Except for a shameless plug for my own book, of course. <g> Fatal Fixer-Upper is a romantic mystery about a New York designer who inherits a house in Maine and lands knee-deep in drywall and paint, family secrets, and historical intrigue dating back to the French revolution. There are scheming relatives, cats, priceless antiques, a missing professor, and a hot handyman with his shirt off. What more could anyone want? ;-)
