The Lightning Thief was the first adventure in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Many have called it the Americanized Harry Potter and in the way that Harry Potter started as a journey from the mundane to the fantastic the Percy Jackson series is similiar. Outside of that though it is a pale comparison.

The Lightning Thief wasn't as much a natural classic as it was a teen book with an interesting premise and a few memorable characters. The 'adolecent' personalities seemed a little over the top several times in the book instead of like real kids on a fantastic adventure.

Even with its 'not quite Harry Potter' status The Lightning Thief is an enjoyable read even though it is a bit short. The adventure was somewhat predictable though there were a few surprises to be had.

I'd definately recommend this book for the young adult who maybe just couldn't get through Harry Potter.
