I've never read anything by this author before. This is a 10th installment in the Easy Rawlins series featuring a parade of multi-cultural characters from all walks of life getting themselves mixed up in criminal and romantic activities. I'm always interested in racial attitudes of the 50s-70s era, especially from the minority's point of view and this book is copious in that insight. There is an existential tone to it, especially when the story contrasts several large poverty stricken families. It's comedic and incredibly sad at the same time. The book reads really fast but once in a while you'll come across a poignant or beautiful line that interrupts the flow and makes you contemplate a whole trail of things. ...less

I think this book is criticized too harshly. Come on, people, lighten up.

This translation doesn't convey the enchantment and exoticism of the medieval Russia that I envisioned when reading Russian fairy tales in their original language as a child (and ;) adult). Its black and white woodcuts, while in accordance with Russian traditional folk elements, take the magic out of these tales and impoverish them. I would much prefer to read these if they were illustrated by the likes of Ivan Bilibin, Gennady Spirin, Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov, and believe it or not, the Russian lacquer artists of Kholui, Mstera, Palekh and Fedoskino villages. Other than that, I am glad that a collection like this is in print and available to English speaking readers. Better this than nothing at all. ...less
