The whole concept behind the "Among the..." series is depressing and frightening to think that the government would have so much control over people. Reminds me of China and the Soviet Union. I almost see our country going in that direction today. Nice ending though. The best thing is there is lots to talk about with a teen reading the same books.

Although the situation Luke/Lee finds himself in now at the Henderson School for Boys is difficult and depressing, this is a fast paced story and it is encouraging to see Luke's courage growing as he gets used to being around other people and deals with the hazing of the other boys.

Very interesting story line about a future when the government controls everything; the number of children a family can have (2), what crops the farmers can plant, what animals they can keep on their farms. Government leaders seem to have the majority of the wealth and the rules are not as strict for them but they are still only allowed 2 children. Written in 1997 but a bit frightening when we see the controls the government is trying to grab today.

Action packed, good story line. I like the history (don't know what is true and what is made up, however) and archeology angle. Also like when the good guys always come out on top.

I heard about William Kamkwamba from a YouTube video. His story sounded interesting and I am so glad I read his book. I loved reading about his curiosity and his sometimes unsuccessful experiments. I do not understand a lot of what he learned from his library books. So I find it amazing that he could teach himself all about electricity and how different electrical things work and then build new ones. His persistance in finding the parts he needed to build his windmill is notable. I love the humor he slips into his narrative. His description of the famine is heartbreaking. He worked on the family farm because he had to. How many American kids would be able to do that? His triumph in the end is awe inspiring. I wish we could appreciate all we have here and remember people all over the world who live more like William and his family did. He has a bright future and I hope he writes another book in about ten or fifteen years.

I read this because one of my granddaughters liked it and I was interested to see what she likes. Koly is a wonderful example of perseverance. It is hard to believe that girls are treated so badly in some other cultures.

From the description of this book you might think it depressing and in parts there is a lot to think about. The message is that those who are prepared for the end of times events prophesied in the scriptures and are living the way they should will be ok. Not really well written - lots of characters and different story lines makes in depth character development difficult - but an exciting read. I like stories where the "bad guys" get what they deserve. Unfortunately innocent people are often affected too. That's when it is important to remember that this life is not all there is in the eternal scheme of things.
