bookshelves: ghosts, royal, teen
Interesting concept, bad writing. Some of my favorite passages (once I decided to start marking them):
1. "Jeezy-creezy." (56) Who says that???
2. "Hello, Shirley MacLaine, get Larry King on the phone! Someone's stealing your act." (57) Um, I have no idea. I couldn't even remember who Shirley MacLaine was besides an actress, are teens going to know?
3. "Return. To. Me. To who me? What does it mean? Ignoring the reference to the forgettable Minnie Driver/David Duchovny movie of the same title..." (135). This movie was released on DVD in 2000. In 2000 most of the readers of this book were in the 3-7 age range. Are they going to know what movie this is??? NO!
4. "You look like death on a cracker." (315) What???
Oh, and her dream boy is always (and he's mentioned many times) described as the Dasani-Blue-Eyed Boy. Talk about a cumbersome description. Plus, you know, water bottles make me feel romantic so it's such an apt description....not.
There are too many horrible examples to write them all down. The only thing saving this book from a one star review from me is the originality of story. There aren't any other serious (with equipment and everything) ghost hunting novels about teens that I know of. ]]>

Amazing. I love Melina Marchetta. I can't believe how well she crossed over from realistic to fantasy. Longer review to come but it will be pretty gushy. :) ]]>
