I'm a little conflicted on this, because Lethem's obviously really talented, and has a voice of his own (even if he and Chabon seem to be cut from similar cloths), and I feel this was a good introduction to him for me, but I still wonder if I'm not missing something by reading one his sprawling novels. Also I feel a little scammed in that I got the hardcover at Skylight for 5 bucks and felt really cool, until I saw that the paperback version had two more stories added on, which is like when you buy a record and then it's rereleased with awesome bonus tracks and you wonder why you didn't just have the good sense to pirate the thing in the first place. Still, a pretty breezy short story collection, where he gets to play around with his influences (Marvel Comics, Philip K. Dick, Noah Baumbach) without anyone getting hurt....less

This is probably as close I've come to giving a book five stars without doing so. It's Coupland in his undisputed prime as a writer, and, to my surprise, the book succeeds not in spite of the dated references, but because of them. Even as we get to laugh at the way the names have shuffled (remember when we thought Apple would go out of business?) we can still laugh at the mistakes we're still making. Awesome....less
