I do not feel that I "attacked" you, and it is not at all my intention to make Goodreads feel like a hostile environment. But ... if authors can respond to positive comments about their books, why not to negative? Personal insult or as you say "attack" are always beyond the pale, but that is not what I did. Why not a debate over dissenting points of view, and why should the author be excluded? With all sincere good wishes to you and your reading enjoyment,
kate

Hi TJ - Thanks for this and sorry it's taken me a while to reply -- busy with 2nd novel. Glad you got a tast of home in reading my novel. Curious that you say that the ending confuses you -- if anything, I would've thought it was a little too UNconfusing, in that all four of the sibs come to terms with their mother, in their different ways. I wrote it that way because I was interested in exploring how people can grow, once they find the courage to face their, shall we say, habits of being --rather than stay stuck in the past. I have to admit, when I wrote the novel, my own life was in the process of doing an enormous swing around from bad and sad to renewed and wonderful, and I wanted my characters, whom I'd got to know so well, to share that transformation.

Does that make sense, at all?

All best,
Kate

TJ wrote: "Hi Kate!

As an Australian living in the US, it was so great to hear about 'wagging' 'big noting yourself' and 'sangas' again!
You had a dream about my book? Oh boy, this is a first -- as far as I know! Apart from all the dreams I had about it, of course. Thanks for being open to having a discussion, or shall we say conversation. I've been wanting to explore in more depth the reader response especially to Rosemarie, the mother. You may know that in Australia the novel was called "Listen", which I now realise takes the emphasis off her act of abandonment and is more empathetic to ALL the characters. I've wondered if the US title might have influenced American readers, who seem very strongly focused on the abandonment issue, and very hard in their judgment about Rosemarie. You expressed it so succinctly: "From the first moment she revealed herself as such a selfish person, I spent the book being angry with her and felt that she didn’t deserve any measure of forgiveness." Can I just open up our conversation by asking you to explore that in a little more detail: why does she not deserve forgiveness? What sort of selfish act DOES deserve forgiveness? What are the relative benefits available to her adult children from forgiving her, or not forgiving her? Or -- anything else you might like to talk about -- such as your dream!

Best, Kate
