Despite rave reviews sent my way prior to reading this book, it falls short of a 'raver' for several reasons.

1. TMI : I got bogged down in Swedish bank names, financial jargon, and just a lot of excess info that didn't really need to be there.
2. Action : About 3/4 way through the book, it's really good until the last two chapters. Cut out the rest, and it'd be great -- but having to wait half the book for the two protagonists to even meet was torture.
3. Main character : Mikael Blomkvist, one of those two protagonists, could've used a good ol' character flaw. Instead, all the women fall in love with him, he picks up and drops relationships at the drop of a hat, and his attitude doesn't change a whole lot from the beginning to the end, despite a hint that it might have around the action part. He's not a bad character, but I didn't fall in love with him like everyone in the novel seemed to.

Quick read, though assigning the term 'quick' to a book centered around the Holocaust seems a bit wrong. The story is different in that it's told through the eyes of the author, whose parents went through the period but who himself was born after WWII ended. Though perhaps told a bit too quickly, it maintains an outsider feel without getting to bogged down in tragic prose or details.
