Throwing trees around, the green eyes, pale cold skin, the use of Italian phrases here and there, the whole "dazzled" thing...
I thought so too. Granted, she wrote Twilight for fun and probably wasn't worried about the similarities between the books. Maybe, in the 10+ years between reading Vampire Diaries (assuming she read the series right after it came out) and writing Twilight she forgot where some of her ideas came from. I know that if I was inspired by another book, I would be very careful to not leave as obvious a trail.

Okay, I had to read the first book of this series The Awakening because I'd heard that it was so similar to Twilight, that Stephenie Meyer likely had gotten many of her ideas it. Published in 1991, when she would have been 17, it's entirely conceivable that she had read the young-adult series. And there are a LOT of similarities. So similar that she would likely avoid admitting that she had read it. And made an impression on her, such that 12 years later she was inspired to write her own version.
