it's always such a pleasure when a book surprises you by going in a direction you weren't expecting. "unwind" by shusterman did just that, i thought i knew what was coming, i thought it would be what it seemed. after the "heartland war" between the pro-life and pro-choice armies a compromise is reached. the "bill of life" guarantees that a life is safe from conception until age 13. however from age 13-18 a parent may choose to retroactively "abort" a child, so long as their life doesn't really end. when a child is "unwound" their entire body, all 100% of their tissue from brain to skin is used for transplants, therefore since all parts are still technically alive, the child hasn't really been killed. the story follows connor, a young man who finds out his parents have decided to unwind him; risa, a ward of the state who hasn't proved herself "talented" enough to be kept alive any longer; and lev, a "tithe", a child who was literally born to be unwound. these teens are not what you expect, their stories are harrowing and gutwrenching and heartbreaking. it's a truly horrifying look at a possible future when someone tried to stop a war by shocking one or both sides into sanity, and what happened when neither side blinked...

now *that* is how you end a series! i loved this book, i didn't want to put it down and i didn't want to finish it. percy was brave and good and i was sorry that the series ended, but i suppose after such a huge battle, he deserved a little break.

i really appreciated the fact that percy was indeed important to the story, but the rest of his friends were also important to the story. he was the leader but he wasn't the savior, to watch others sacrifice for their beliefs and to have percy then make sure that those dreams and hopes were fulfilled was what really made him a hero for me.
