NO, don't take any away - in fact, add some if anything. I hate this trend of lowering standards to make numbers look better ... it doesn't make us a more informed society. I think much of the secret to getting kids turned on to some of these books is in how it is taught ... I remember I had teacher that made us watch Star Wars while we read the Odyssey and we discussed the parallels - and it was great because so many other students participated. Another instance I can think of is trying to help my younger brother get through Romeo and Juliet, being taught by his give-the-same-list-of-facts-every-year-and-make-sure-they-know-the-plot, very boring high school teacher ... I just used small, stupid things to engage him (like showing him how SO much of Romeo and Juliet is just very old d*ck jokes), and it worked so much better than the kind of bland, this-is-a-classic-so-you-should-read-it teaching many kids suffer through. Looking back, I feel fortunate to have read so many books in grade/high school - even ones I might still find boring. I think this is the case because so many of the "classics" or great books have their importance beyond the book itself - often they are more like representatives of enormous social change and/or tensions of their time, brought to life and demonstrating that social climate so much more vividly than most other things can.

Brubaker is just great; him and Greg Rucka can write some of the best crime comics you can find. They both have a very authentic Noir feel, if you know what I mean. Definitely check out Criminal, its very good; he also just released a new comic called Incognito that looks great. If you never read Gotham Central (lasted about 40 or so issues, a few years back), I really loved that title and miss it sorely; has some great work by both Brubaker and Rucka ... it isn't a Batman book (really, he rarely appears, and when he does it is brief) but rather a gritty cop comic about cops who happen to be in Gotham. Very cool.

I have similar tastes, from what you listed, so I would highly recommend these. You already seem to be reading much of the great stuff: Drawn and Quarterly really publishes great stuff - go to their website and look around. Fun Home is a really great graphic novel, by Allison Brechdel. If you liked Berlin you should also check out Jar of Fools.

That is the only drawback to reading the best of the best - as a lifelong comic reader, you get in the habit of going every Wednesday and picking up new books, but sadly most of the great, great stuff only comes out around once a year, if that.

While I agree Moore did some wonderfully innovative things, he has worn on me in recent years. LOEG was brilliant, and I liked some of the ABC stuff, but too often he seems to be doing weird for the sake of weird. Honestly, he is more of a mainstream writer than he is credited as, and just too much of a curmudgeon to be content.

Morrison I see as totally different from Moore, though they are often associated together for their "weirdness" factor. Anyone who is just recently being exposed to Morrison via Batman RIP should definitely read something else, as I think it is some of his poorer work. Morrison has a great ability to be weird when the title calls for it, but he also has the ability to be innovative - and not just weird - when he is doing more mainstream work. For instance, The Invisibles and The Filth are extremely bizarre, bizarre reads - but completely appropriate for the goal and audience. On the other hand, his run on Uncanny X-Men, and even more so the amazing work in All Star Superman, are fresh takes on tired and well-worn stories/characters. My point is that Morrison is really dynamic - if you don't like one title he writes, try something else.

Lastly, I have to take issue with the statement that Ennis is "a poor caricature of the angry English writer." First, I'd say Warren Ellis claims that title long before Ennis would; second, I really enjoy Ennis' work, and he is what he is. That kind of criticism seems analogous to criticizing Sergio Leone because a film didn't have emotional depth or powerful drama; well, he doesn't do those. If you're looking for spaghetti westerns, there is no one finer.
