Some books have a way of forcing themselves upon you. I had absolutely no intention of reading this provocative, disturbing little piece of intellectual nastiness. . . until my Dad insisted by leaving a copy within eyeshot when he left town.

Opening on an alien, broken landscape in a post-apocalyptic world, Atwood cleverly shows us the roadmap to get there, throwing in enough introspective humanity and pharmaceutical whodunit to keep us flipping the pages. Like a slowly unfolding Planet of the Apes, except we know the twist ending in advance. It all looks eerily familiar -- and naturally, we are the seeds of our own undoing. At the end, the porn looks like ultraviolence, the ultraviolence like porn, and private enterprise a little like both.

Is it a coincidence that, the next morning on the treadmill, all I could find was news about Linsey Lohan, fires in the west, droughts and floods, war. . . and Dow Jones industrial business as usual? Hmm.

Had Michael Crichton and Al Gore adapted H.G. Wells's The Time Machine and let Martin Amis punch up the characters, it might have come out something like this. In short, brilliant.

I'm reading this at the moment and it is terrific. graham has a great perspective on startups vs. bigger enterprises (having sold Viaweb to Yahoo! as the basis of its Stores product), as well as an interesting historical perspective on innovation and value creation.
