I had a hard time putting down The Corrections, even though there were times when I wanted to. The characters were totally unlikeable, and it was hard for me to relate to or have sympathy for them most of the time, but I was fascinated by them. Each one was so selfish in his or her own way, and it was interesting to see their reactions to circumstances that they couldn't manipulate and control, like their father's illness. My favorite things about the book were the vivid descriptions and the fact that you get to know the main characters so intimately that they truly seem like real people....less

"I loved this book. It's about, obviously, a woman homesteader in Wyoming in 1913. She is amazing and so optimistic about everything. Her descriptions of nature and wildlife are so beautiful.

The only other Stephen King book I've read is On Writing, which I really liked, so I've been meaning to read his other books. A friend let me borrow this one because he said it's a great introduction to Mr. King's writing. It was very good--a collection of short stories with little introductions before each telling where the idea for the story came from.
The collection contained some great ghost stories, which always interest me. I especially loved the one about the little boy who meets the devil by the river. The story 1408 was also really good, and we watched the movie, starring John Cusack, later, but even though the movie was good, it didn't match up to what I had imagined in the story (of course), so I was a bit disappointed. I'll definitely read more Stephen King in the future....less

This book is all the rage among the Mormon girls I hang out with. And since I'm a Mormon girl, too, I had to read it. Actually, a non-Mormon co-worker is the first person who recommended it to me. She said it is hilarious and that I wouldn't be able to stop reading it. She was right!
The book is absolutely cheesy, especially the descriptions of Edward's "alabaster brow" and his skin that shimmers like diamonds in the sunlight. I also like how each of Bella's meals is described in detail so we know exactly what she ate for dinner the night before (lasagne with salad and milk to drink--very wholesome). While I do enjoy ridiculing the book, it was fun to read, and I think I'll eventually read the other two in the series. As a fan of the novel Dracula, and the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I really can't be too cynical about vampire stories.
Did you know that they are going to make this book into a movie?...less

I loved this book. I had seen the Audrey Hepburn movie a couple times before, so I had a vague idea what it was about, but this book is absolutely nothing like the movie. It's 100 times better. Of course, Audrey Hepburn is amazing in the movie, so it's definitely worth watching.
My favorite thing about this book was the description of NYC in the '40s. Truman Capote's writing style is so nice. It made me want to go take a walk on the upper east side, even though it's nothing like it was back then. I loved Holly, but I really loved the narrator. He was so innocent and sweet (nothing like the stupid oaf in the movie). I pictured him as the young Truman.
The short stories at the end of this book were very sweet, too, especially the one about the little boy making fruitcake with his grandma.
Thanks, Natalie, who gave me this book for Christmas....less
