"Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know"...sums up Lord Byron and this quote is by one of his lovers-Caroline Lamb. O'Brien's portrait is more on the lines of an article for Vanity Fair-short, salacious, and forgiving of all of his rock star faults. Based on the books by E.F Benson it is a series of vignettes of British upper crust life in the 20's and 30's. Mapp and Lucia have a rivalry which is so much fun to watch in a little seaside town named Tilling. I highly recommend both the books and the TV series. There is a great omnibus called I believe Make Way for Lucia.

On another note I would agree that Joan Hickson was the definitive Miss Marple. I have found that around the holidays-her dvd's go on sale on the Barnes and Noble's site. So I have been able to gradually add to my collection.

I am so glad to see your review. I love the author in interviews and honestly have picked up and put this book down for a year now. Of the third of the book that I have read I absolutely agree that it just plods-so I have been saving it for a day where so much else has been going on that a little plodding would be a pleasure. Did you see the relation to the Great Gatsby in the book?
