This book was not fun... not the way the last few books were "fun", where clever Harry got the better of the evil-doer, despite more than a few mishaps. This one was hard for me to call a victory for Harry. He lost a lot and is put in a worse situation because of the events of the story. And now he's bonded to an island, which is kind of cool, but that seems to also carry a heavy burden...

The next book (due out soon) is called simply "Changes", which, when you've read all of Harry's adventures could be the scariest thing to happen to him. As has been pointed out in the last two books, Harry doesn't do "Change" very well. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to it.

Harry is once again in rare form, and the books just keep getting better and better. In what was once a very black and white world, where Harry was the good guy and the supernaturals were the bad guys, Butcher has slowly turned Harry's world on its ear and now Harry isn't sure who is really good or evil, himself included. There's a really nice bit about free will and being able to make a choice against your own nature that was very well delivered. And a nice bit about Harry revealing how now being a teacher has improved his own skills, something I know a lot about.

Butcher states in the author's note that as much as the Sci-Fi series has put the Dresden Files into the spotlight, he always felt more like Harry was meant for comic books. Indeed, he is. Harry is an iconic hero, often depicted as the one man who can hold back the forces of darkness and risks his life to do so.

I'm really starting to get into this character and even appreciate his idiosyncrasies...

For me, the best part about this particular adventure for Harry Dresden was all the personal development he went through. Harry showed real growth in this book and developed as a character in multiple ways.

And the scene of them going down into the basement where a Black Court Vampire was waiting for them... that had me worried... and I started with the 10th book!

And we get to meet Mouse for the first time. That was fun.
